TrustPower has welcomed the announcement by Contact Energy that it is taking direct control of Empower from July this year.
"Our recommendation to customers to choose Empower was based on a number of factors, one of which was the fact that Empower was part of Contact Energy," TrustPower's Community Relations Manager, Graeme Purches, said today.
"Our customers have a choice of future supplier, but based on our analysis of all of the options, including the latest involving free hot water bottles, the Empower option of competitive prices, a $50 credit on the second bill, and entry into competition draws, remains a very attractive option. It costs customers absolutely nothing, and if they change their mind a few months after transferring, they have still had the advantage of the $50 credit, in the middle of winter when power bills are normally higher anyway, with no price penalty."
Mr Purches said the vast majority customers who had contacted TrustPower had advised that they would be accepting the advice to take up the Empower offer, and thanked TrustPower for its honesty in telling customers that it was not competitive in the Wellington and Christchurch markets.
"The customers I have spoken to have all understood the situation. I have told them that a significant price increase is in the wind, and they are grateful of the opportunity to achieve some certainty by choosing to change suppliers now"
