Glasgow Prestwick a natural choice for Cargolux

26 Nov 2004

Europe's largest all-cargo airline's tenth anniversary at Prestwick

On the tenth anniversary of its operations at the airport, Cargolux, Europe's largest all-cargo airline, says Glasgow Prestwick is one of its most successful and efficient stations worldwide thanks to its ability to operate without restrictions, its lack of congestion and its speedy turnround facility.

Glasgow Prestwick Freight Director Stuart Sinclair highlighted the productive partnership with the Luxembourg-based airline on the day Prestwick had its busiest twenty-four hours for freight this year with eleven 747s loaded, unloaded and fuelled.

"Cargolux is one of our biggest customers with six regular Boeing 747 Freighter services every week. It started flying into Prestwick in 1994 based on fifth freedom traffic rights granted by the UK Department for Transport," he explained, "and ten years on it's going from strength to strength.

"There are direct outbound flights to Seattle, San Francisco, Calgary and Luxembourg from Prestwick, with direct inbound flights originating from Guadalajara, San Francisco and Houston."

Cargolux's Country Manager UK and Ireland Mark Boffee said: "Cargolux initiated Prestwick services into its route network because of its close proximity to "Silicon Glen", the home of Scotland's hi-tech industries, many of whose companies require excellent air freight connections with their suppliers throughout the USA and Far East.

"It's also an ideal airport for Cargolux because of its close proximity to the commercial centres of Glasgow and Edinburgh, whilst Aberdeen, one of Europe's most important oil-producing centres with its constant requirement for the speedy worldwide movement of very urgent and often large oil-well parts, is just four hours away by road.

"Additionally, Rolls Royce aero engines and numerous other suppliers for Boeing Aircraft of Seattle are within a relatively short driving distance from Prestwick, as are most of the UK`s heavy manufacturing industries."

He added: "Cargolux values Glasgow Prestwick Airport as an integral part of its worldwide network as it provides an excellent base for transiting cargo from the USA, Mexico and the Far East and for the development of the Scottish and Irish export markets.

"Prestwick has three x 20 tonne and one x 30 tonne capacity high-loaders and flights can operate without restrictions. The quick turnaround of all Cargolux flights means that Prestwick Airport has become one of the most successful stations in our network. The local Cargolux team works with the airport to provide a seamless and highly effective service to all our customers.

"Couple these factors with an efficient, non-congested airport which offers speedy aircraft turnaround times 365 days a year with excellent trucking connections to the rest of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and these are all reasons that make Prestwick a natural choice for Cargolux."

Stuart Sinclair added: "Our service partnership, now in its tenth year with Cargolux, has proved to be of mutual benefit and has been of great significance to Scottish manufacturing in providing direct connections with the major economies in USA and the Far East. It is vital that these services continue to be supported to ensure that Scotland plc maintains these important trading links."
