Infratil Airports Europe April 2006 traffic figures have been posted on the Infratil website.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport
Overall passenger traffic for May was flat on the prior year at 207,906.
Freight volumes were 2,421 MT, up on the prior month but well below the equivalent month of the prior year. Loads on the main customers remain under pressure from a generally weak UK freight market, although average yield has been assisted by a number of ad-hoc movements.
Work has commenced to expand and reconfigure the security screening point to improve passenger flow and increase retail dwell time. The reconfiguration also enables an expansion of the Nuance tax and duty free store in order to take advantage of the summer passenger volumes.
Landside retail performance will benefit from the recent opening of a Starbucks coffee shop. Work has commenced on the store fit out for Peckhams, a local high quality gift food chain.
Kent International Airport
The total freight volume for April was 1,450 MT which is an improvement on the prior month.
The Airport welcomed its first passengers from Kent Escapes, part of Prestwick-based Seguro Holidays, which is operating weekly summer season charter flights to Faro and Barcelona. The launch was successfully supported by the Kent Escapes Holiday Show earlier in the month where an estimated 3,000 people came to the Airport to hear about the offers. The early results are encouraging given Kent Escapes is a new brand, launched very late for Summer 06 and is selling only via direct sell rather than through travel agents. An expanded program is expected to go on sale in late June for Summer 07.
Overall passenger traffic for May was 64,394 which is in line with the prior year result. The new Ryanair daily service to Dublin is performing strongly although Wizz Air have given notification that they do not intend to commence a route to Katowice which they had originally planned for September.
