Wellington Airport domestic passengers were flat in January, at 0.1% growth on January 2006, reflecting a financial year to date trend (0.5%). Domestic load factors for the month were 72% overall (72.6% year to date). Despite highly publicised reductions in headline domestic fares by Air New Zealand and rumours of new entrants in the domestic market, there is little to suggest that the flat market will improve in 2007.
International passengers grew by 4.7% in January 2007, reflecting some growth in November and December. While growth in recent months is encouraging, it is worth remembering that this represents only a partial recovery on falls in the previous year (international passengers fell by 10% in November 2005, 12% in December 2005 and 12% in January 2006).
The first few months with new duty free arrangements have shown strong trading, and work on Stage 1 of the international terminal are all but complete. Airport retail
park is now almost fully leased. Consultations with airlines over aeronautical prices are continuing.
