Across Western Australia's commercial and industrial segments
Perth Energy was established in 1999 as Western Australia’s market began to deregulate. Since then they have been building a notable retail customer base. Market reform has taken customer contestability to the current small business demand level of 5.7kW (size of a deli). The previous integrated utility, Western Power, was disaggregated in April 2006 to its current generation of retail and networks businesses. A Wholesale Electricity Market was established in September that year.
Supported by Infratil, the company developed a 120MW dual-fuel peaking power station at Kwinana, in Perth's industrial heartland. This station was commissioned in October 2010 and consists of two Pratt & Whitney's fast response Swiftpac gas turbine units. Perth Energy has retail growth aspirations to cement its position as the third energy supplier in the WA market; being just one of three electricity retailers licensed to supply smaller-use customers
